Mac and Harm had been dancing around their feelings for years and, when they finally decided to go for it, they received conflicting orders. The marines were sending Mac to, IIRC, San Francisco and the navy was sending Harm to London. So they flipped a coin to see who would resign their commission. The show ended with the coin in the air.
Then, amidst much fanfare, both characters were brought back on NCIS:LA only to learn they had not been living happily ever after but were split up. The fans, naturally, lost their collective shit......
