The lovely and wise JayEm has gathered up some of my stories and put them into a zine with some outstanding artwork! It's The Ascended Archaeologist Series (plus), all in one place. Please take a look at it and all the other zines available on the Ancient's Gate website. Description and link below:

First in a set of zines by Marzipan77. A premier author of stories in many different fandoms with a great wit, tight plots, and a gift for language that draws you into a story and keeps you riveted until the inevitably satisfying payoff at the end. This group of stories originates with Ascended (TM) Daniel and his adventures while a resident of the higher plane. It spans universes as diverse as NCIS to Torchwood to HP and even the A Team. I hope you enjoy.

Daniel Jackson has ascended - now what? The Others have agreed to allow Daniel to visit other realities, other universes, on a quest to balance his own soul. Daniel wants to make a difference - and there are plenty of people out there who could use his help. Thankfully, the Others are willing to come along for the ride.

11 pt Book Antiqua, with .50 margins. 142 pages, 65775 words. Art by JayEm.

Challenge #12

In your own space, tell us who you would recast in a film, tv series or webseries, or maybe someone voicing a cartoon or videogame. Or who would you cast to play a character in a book, comic or maybe even your own fiction! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Does Michael Shanks count? Because I would have totally cast him in any number of tv shows and movies over the years. He's a stand-out actor, people! Just because he did sci-fi and is Canadian doesn't mean he's B list! I'd have liked to have seen him play a vampire. Or the president. Can you imagine Air Force One with MS instead of Harrison Ford? Yes, please.

Anywho, making "face claims" for my original fiction is common for me. I take an actor, an athlete, or an interesting person I've seen and use their physical characteristics for one of my characters. It makes it much simpler to describe them if I have an actual face to work from.

Beyond that, two of my characters are definitely Jack and Daniel from Stargate Sg-1. Or how I think they might act in a different world.

Barca - nickname "The General" - short silver hair, dark eyes, sharp and decisive and protective of his people. Strategist. Can be ruthless.
Fabius - nickname "The Seer" - brown hair and blue eyes, insightful, gifted, empathetic. He'll stand between someone and a staff blast if you know what I mean.

These two come as a pair in my writerly brain.

Challenge #8

In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year: it can be a list of fanworks you're especially proud of, a gift of your time to the community, a quality or skill you cultivated in yourself, something you generally feel went well. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I published two books! Today in 2021, my first book, Child of the Scales, was available for pre-order.

Changing from fan fic writer to original fic was a long process. I had to learn to write without the feedback and love of the fandom, develop my own characters and world, and give myself a schedule with goals to meet.

Worth it? Oh, yes. To hold that book in my hands, to share my stories with so many others? Priceless.

And, you know what? I'm still going to be a fanfic writer for life. Why would I stop??

But I've also learned that nothing is done in a vacuum. I have such a great cloud of supporters from fandom that it resonates through my entire life, fanfic, original fic, everything. I'd be nowhere without my heart sisters, kudo-leavers, and commenters.

Oops, I did it again. Committed fanfic. Even though book 3 of my original fic series is staring daggers at me, this story wouldn't let me go.
This time, it's an AU after The Goblet of Fire wherein Percy Weasley explains himself, Severus Snape is not just a spy, but a double-O spy, and Harry gets some much needed help.

Posted on AO3

Title: Heir of the Slytherin
by: [personal profile] marzipan77
Rated M for Mature. Discussions of sexual abuse (past, not Harry)
Gen - no slash
Characters: Harry and Percy friendship, Percy and Snape friendship, Harry and Snape mentor. Other characters from the series appear. Neville, Narcissa, Remus, etc. Muggle characters; Queen Elizabeth II, PM Major, various OCs.
Summary: AU. Percy Weasley is not exactly as he appears. Trained under the master spy, Tomos Prince aka Severus Snape, he reaches out to Harry after the Third Task offering options Harry never imagined. Maybe the muggle government can help, but only if Harry passes an examination by the Queen's own Legilimens.

After The Goblet of Fire, Harry's life takes a left-hand turn into the muggle world and he ends up with a new guardian and  acults who look out for him. The New Order of the Phoenix, better organized, better funded, and using modern technology, is determined to train him to survive. But only if Harry will let them.

Did I need another social media outlet to market my original fiction? Apparently, the answer is yes!
If there's one thing you learn quickly as an indie author, it's that marketing never ends. Without the backing of a publishing company or agent, everything falls on the author's shoulders.

So I decided to pick something that would be fun and different. Instagram, being a largely image/picture/video format rather than something devoted to words sounded very alien at first, but I find myself there frequently, loving the pictures, the cat videos, the fandom fun that happens there.

If you're so inclined, I'm [profile] maryelstone there. Give me a poke. Throw a sheep. Oh, dear, I've dated myself again.

Ta very much!

An AO3 meme, snagged from [personal profile] paulamcg

1) How many works do you have on AO3? 36

2) What’s your total AO3 word count? 941,423 words. Yowza!

3) How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?

Stargate SG-1, NCIS, Harry Potter, Torchwood, Quantum Leap, The A-Team, The Magnificent Seven, Criminal Minds, The Avengers (MCU).

4) What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Earning the Title Earning the Title - Chapter 1 - Marzipan77 - NCIS [Archive of Our Own] NCIS

A Fine and Private Place A Fine and Private Place - Chapter 1 - Marzipan77 - NCIS [Archive of Our Own] NCIS/Criminal Minds

Black and White Black and White - Chapter 1 - Marzipan77 - NCIS [Archive of Our Own] NCIS

Harry Potter and the Persistence of Vision Harry Potter and the Persistence of Vision - Chapter 1 - Marzipan77 - Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling [Archive of Our Own] Harry Potter

A Good Man’s Life A Good Man's Life - Chapter 1 - Marzipan77 - Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling [Archive of Our Own] Harry Potter

5) Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

Yes! Because connecting with readers is fabulous! These wonderful people have gone out of their way to read my excessively long stories and leave me a note! How exciting! As I’ve said many times, fanfic readers are so lovely to connect with. Friends I’ve met in fandom are now my family. I’m so grateful.

6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

Oy. I had a whole angst period. Probably The Strength to Fall (SG-1) or Box Out (NCIS)

7) What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

I gave Sam Beckett a happy ending in The Leap Home (SG-1/QL crossover)

8) Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?

Yes indeed. I wrote a weird The A-Team/Torchwood crossover called …Sing You to your Rest for the Into A Bar Challenge.

9) Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Yes. I had a stalker on my NCIS fics for a while. Read them, told me how horrible my characters were, how I couldn’t write. But kept reading them. Deleted. Moved on.

10) Do you write smut? If so what kind? No.

11) Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I know of.

12) Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes.

13) Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes.

14) What’s your all time favorite ship?

Not a shipper. I love GEN friendship/found family fics to read and write.

15) What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

I finish all my fanfics. I do have a Harry Potter bouncing around in my head, but I haven’t even started it so that doesn’t count! I am in the middle of writing my original fantasy series The Heir of Time, so lots more books to come.

16) What are your writing strengths?

Discipline. I finish what I start. I don’t think it’s fair to the reader to leave a fic unfinished for months or years. I hope I capture the spirit of the characters from the screen.

17) What are your writing weaknesses?

LENGTH! I can’t seem to write short fics!! Did you see my word count???

18) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I put in some badly Google Translated Italian in a fic and met a lovely reader who helped me change it. It’s problematic. Mostly because I can’t figure out how to put in the correct accent marks.

19) What was the first fandom you wrote for? If you don’t count my childhood Mod Squad fics, definitely Stargate SG-1

20) What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

Wow, that’s hard. I’m happy with And the Truth Shall Set you Free And the Truth Shall Set You Free - Chapter 1 - Marzipan77 - Stargate SG-1 [Archive of Our Own] (SG-1) It feels the teamyest.

marzipan77: (Default)
Title: And the Truth Shall Set You Free
Author: [personal profile] marzipan77
Rating: GEN/T
Fandom: Stargate SG-1
Characters: Jack, Daniel, Teal'c, Sam, Vala, Adria, Tomin, Mitchell
Tags: Ark of Truth Rewrite, Team as Family, Jack comes along, no Repli-Terminator, Friendship, H/C
Summary: Daniel's visions send him to Washington, DC, to meet with the only one who will understand. And who might just have the power to override TPTB who have some stupid plan about Replicators.
Warnings: Psychological torture, references to child death, minor character death

Snippet: Jack had his mouth open to argue when Daniel did the whole ‘absent’ thing again. Eyes blank. The muscles of his face relaxed, his hands falling to his lap. It was a short lapse this time.
“Dakara.” Daniel cleared his throat then shot back the rest of his scotch, wincing. “I hate it when they do that.”
Jack’s eyebrows tried to lift off his face.
“Use my voice,” Daniel explained.
“Well, sure.” What. The. Ever-loving. Hell.
"I was just shown that Dakara was the first place the Alterans settled in this galaxy. And that they left a few things behind when they moved on.” Daniel slumped, pinching the bridge of his nose.“
Someone wants you to go after this thing.”
“Yes, I figured that much out myself.”

My second original novel, Journey of Brothers, is live on Amazon Kindle today!

I'm squeeing all over the place; gonna have to clean that up later.

Finally, my series, The Heir of Time, is actually looking like a series. Two books published in 2021 and book three coming in 2022.

Fantasy, alt-history, YA with more than a smidgeon of adult POV. It's set in an Ancient Middle East a bit twisted from our own, with different gods, different magics, and different geography but peopled by those of every race as we would find in that area.

Oh, and did I mention it's also peopled by my favorite characters from fandom. The names have been changed to protect the innocent!

You'll find a colonel and a geek, best friends and teammates.
You'll find Ascended beings of a sort, who struggle with interfering, and a blue-eyed chap who argues with them.
Many other characters might look or feel familiar - after all, I was a fanfic writer first and foremost. Still am. Proud of it.

Check it out over on Amazon if you'd like: It's on Kindle Unlimited and regular Kindle, Paperback coming soon.

And book 1, Child of the Scales, is still on clearance for another 24 hours (99 cents) before it goes back to regular price.

Journey of Brothers

What a year. I've learned a lot. Learned about myself, about my closest friends and family. I've learned about grief and all the different ways it manifests in a life.

I've also learned practical things. How to publish a book on Amazon. How to format a paperback. How to get engagement on Twitter to advertise said book. How to keep fandom love alive while all the other is going on.

And that's been essential. Because fandom, the people I've met there, the conversations, the acceptance found in fandom has sustained me through everything.

While I'm finishing my Stargate Sg1 story for Open the Iris, I've published book 2 in my high fantasy series The Heir of Time.

Journey of Brothers definitely nods to my experience. Matthias' and Deok's grief and guilt mirror my own, my own journey through loss. The love Matthias finds in his new brother is what sustains him, just like my found family of fandom sustains me.

If you're in the mood for a ya fantasy with an adult twist, check it out here on Amazon. Kindle edition of the first novel, Child of the Scales, is on sale for 99 cents, too.

As the Goa'uld Ba'al on Stargate SG-1, he was the best of the baddies. Not just a one note villain, Ba'al was smart, funny, and always seemed to know which side to stand on, which side would inevitably win.

With fans, Cliff Simon was amazing. Friendly, funny, he'd talk for hours, and seemed genuinely concerned about the fan experience.

Although 58 is far too young to lose him, Cliff died doing something he loved, out in nature, living life to the fullest. As fans, we grieve, lifting his family and friends up and hoping his new location is a happy one.

My daughter is moving abroad in May. For the next two years she'll be posted to a hospital in Gabon (she's an Ob/Gyn), but her best friend and roommate for the past eight years has been her large cat, Maximus. He's 9, is 20 inches long, weights 14 pounds (not fat, just BIG), a rescue, and sits right in the center of her heart. Friends who have lived in Gabon for years say that taking him will help with her mental health as she lives and works in such a difficult environment.

Here's the thing: flying for a very long time with a big cat. We're worried about him. About finding a carrier that the airline will approve but that's big enough for him to turn around in during travel. Worried about his mental health. I've never traveled on an airplane with a pet, but I'm hoping some of my fandom friends might have some insight.

The flight from the US to Ethiopia is loooong, then there's a layover, then another flight from Ethiopia to Gabon. Should he wear a harness so she can take him out of the carrier between flights? Will she be allowed to do that? What about pee? Can you use a calming drug or shouldn't you?

Any help or advice would be so welcome. We want to make this trip as comfortable for both of them that we can. Thank you, fandom!

It's today! Today my debut original novel launches on Amazon! Hurrah!

While I've been scrambling this week, posting far too many Insta and Twitter things to try to get the news out, this week has been ... hrm.

Wednesday, my husband's mother died. While not unexpected - she's been failing for months - it has been that weird combination of sorrowful and tediously busy as all deaths are. If you've been responsible for taking care of the business end of a death, you know what I mean. So many things to take care of, decisions to make, paperwork, etc, almost (almost) overshadows the real finality.

And then, as if things aren't complex enough, yesterday morning I slipped and fell straight down on my right knee which has swollen to elephant-like proportions and hurts like the dickens. Yes. I am feeling particularly idiotic and clumsy, but that blueberry my hubbie dropped on the floor was the real culprit. Aggressive little ball of blue hate.

So, if you're in the mood to step into a new fantasy world that just might be peopled with characters you sort-of recognize, please try out Child of the Scales. I'm working on formatting the paperback version while I ice my knee and take care of business.

Thank you all for your support all these years. I'm definitely not giving up on fanfic!

Challenge #9

In your own space, brag about yourself. Tell us what things you've done that you're proud of; the things that make you the wonderful person you are. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Bragging! Not something you're encouraged to do every day, 'm I right?

Here's something I'm not at all ashamed of: I'm a fanfic writer. (Of course, you are all saying with a slight frown. Isn't that how we know each other? Reading and writing fanfic? Duh!)

Hear me out: now that I have one published novel and a fantasy series in the pipeline, I hear a lot of people say, "So you're done with the fanfic stuff now? Got that out of your system? You're doing "real writing" now? Done with the crayons and coloring books?"

morgan freeman

Fanfic writing is how I learned the craft, how I discovered my fandom family, my heart sisters, the people who have supported me through some of the worst of life's dramas. I am not about to abandon it now. I've met fans, other writers, expanded my world and my world-view, and learned a lot about how to speak civilly to people through the awful medium of the internet.

It took me about two seconds to decide to include my AO3 user name in my "author's bio" on the back of my novel. Because I'm proud of what I've posted there. I'm proud of my Talented!Tony and my Powerful!Harry. I'm grateful for the Jack & Daniel friendship that taught me what kind of teams and partnerships I want to write about in my original fic. I'll never deny my connections to fandom.

In my three major fandoms, here are three stories I particularly like:

Where the River Meets the Sea SG1
Box Out NCIS
Harry Potter and the Interfering Professor (sg1-hp crossover)

Here's to fanfiction and fanfic writers and readers. May it live long and prosper!

Challenge #8

In your own space, create a wishlist. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

My wishlist is strange this year. You see, I've written an original fantasy novel. It may not be fandom, but, as some of my first readers will attest, there are many homages to my fandom favorites found within it. I've face-claimed many characters, basing physical characteristics and friendships on Jack and Daniel, for instance, and peppered side-characters with others.

I'd love for any of my talented artist friends to take a whack at artwork for my characters. I'd love to do a t-shirt, or a design for mugs or coasters based on my novel, but I'm not about to steal a real person's image for that.

It's definitely a pie-in-the-sky request, since I know art is a work of the heart and you all have no reason to love my characters yet. I just wish, that someday, Jonas and Matthias, Barca and Fabius, Deok and Naten, might inspire someone.

Thanks for listening to be drone on and on about my original novel yet again. (I'm pretty excited!)

Challenge #6

In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

All are Gen-ish with some Het in the Harry Potter, and references to various sexual situations in NCIS.

A Marauder's Plan: Over 800,000 words of fabulously plotted reworking of Harry Potter's 4th year. With adults who are concerned about the children, a useful Ministry of Magic, and a Dumbledore taken to task for his abusive manipulations, this pushes all my buttons. Written by the talented CatsAreCool (Rachel500), here is the author's summary:

Alternate Universe based on prompt 'What if Sirius hadn't run away to somewhere sunny after escaping Hogwarts but stayed and tried to make Harry's wish of a home come true?' Covers alternative 4th Year/Goblet of Fire and therefore does not follow canon religiously.

Pairings: Harry/Hermione is the main pairing. All others are surprises so read at your own risk - although I will say there are a number which follow canon.

Tropes/Cliches/Fanon: Independent!Sirius, Manipulative-but-well-meaning!Dumbledore. Plays with fanon concepts of Ancient and Noble Houses, Potter wealth and status, Super!Harry.

Via Wayback Gigolo: NCIS fic by the legendary Kikkimax that explores Tony DiNozzo's character, his uncanny ability undercover and his problematic friendship with Tim McGee. When Tim volunteers to go undercover in a high end male brothel, Tony is pulled in alongside to protect his partner. Sometimes funny, always beautifully written, this is a must read for my fellow Tony fans.

Tropes/Cliches/Fanon: Talented!Tony, Bashful!Tim, Resentful!Tim, Protective!Gibbs. There is violence, some NSFW moments, but mild.

Almost Forever: An angsty Stargate SG-1 tale by Travelling One, where Daniel feels he has no choice but leave the SGC. Strange physical symptoms keep Daniel from the team. Happy ending! If you like a dose of angst with a teamy goodness chaser, this one is for you.

Tropes/Cliches/Fanon: TeamasFamily, Smart!Daniel, Protective!Jack, Archaeology!

These are stories that make me happy - I hope you feel the same!

Snowflake Challenge #5

In your own space, promote a canon/talk about a part of canon that you love. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Whether it is to fix-it, honor it, or expand upon it, canon is why we are all here. So, let's celebrate canon today and talk about our favorites. Nostalgic, new, problematic, or forever canons are all welcome to be loved, dissected, and discussed. Have a favorite scene? A much-loved character? A much-maligned character? Just love the whole thing epically? Talk about it all or as little as you want!

Look at my icon. Now back to the challenge. Then back to the icon. Then to the title. Okay, enough Old Spice commercials! I'm just saying that 'Odd Man Out' is the reason for my plunge into fanfic. It's the reason I dived into fandom and never want to surface. It is the part of canon that intrigues me, riles me up, and gets my defenses going into overdrive.

But, to have an Odd Man Out, you first need a team.

A good team. A team that works well together, solves the crimes, captures the aliens, saves the world, finds the answers. A team that is family, that has a bond, a close friendship. A team that stands for each other and holds each other up. That has gone through hell and, shoulder to shoulder, come out the other side.

That's why the Odd Man Out scenario pulls at my heartstrings. In almost all of my fandoms, there is - on occasion or as part of the backstory and make-up of the team - one member to bears the brunt of the jokes, gets put down, ignored, or treated with disdain. And that person? That's my person.

Ianto Jones in Torchwood. Face in The A-Team. Daniel Jackson in SG1. Tony DiNozzo in NCIS. Dr. Reid in Criminal Minds. Zack Addy in Bones. Ron Weasley in Harry Potter.

Ianto is just a coffee boy who gets the crap jobs. Face is OFTEN ridiculed and not believed for using his greatest gift for the team. Daniel has to explain himself endlessly for his theories to be considered. Tony is ... okay, just don't get me started on the head-slaps and disdain he deals with on a daily basis. Dr. Reid is an awkward, loveable genius. Zack is kept so outside the main group that he falls into the thrall of evil. And Ron - well, he's mostly insulted by the author herself.

These are my people. These situations got me so disgusted that I wrote fanfic to fix it. My first fanfic on ff.net was about Daniel proving, once and for all, that he is worth listening to. That's my jam.

Whether you can say you love it or hate it, the Odd Man Out formula works if only to engage the emotions of the viewer. These are always my favorite characters.

GOAL!!!!

Jan. 8th, 2021 07:00 am
marzipan77: (Default)
I hear the football announcer, the stands erupting, those annoying vuvuzela drowning out everything.

I wouldn't actually mind people cheering for me every time I reach a goal, actually. Imagine that. You finish a chapter of your WIP and suddenly there are 80,000 people outside yelling and screaming. Or after you clean the house. Or call a friend you've been meaning to call. Okay, maybe that would get annoying.

BUT, I published my first novel on Amazon this week, so GOAL!!!!! I'd love for more creators, more artists and writers to get the serious love and attention of sports stars who kick a ball into a net, wouldn't you?

I got some great kudos (not on AO3) from my hubster this week. He bought me wine, saluted me, and said, "Wow. Who knew that writing a book could be so hard? I had no idea until I saw you work on it day in and day out for months and years to get to this point. This is an amazing achievement."

Yep, I'm going to hug that little scene to my cold, dead writer's heart for many months to come.

Snowflake Challenge promotional banner with image of white ice crystals/snowflakes on a dark green background. Text: Snowflake Challenge January 1-31

I will admit, my goals for 2021 changed this week. While I still have my writing goals, listed below, I've added others.

1. Finish formatting Child of the Scales for paperback publishing
2. Finish my deep edit of Book 2 in The Heir of Time series
3. Work on Book 3.
4. Publish Book 2 (yep, still dithering on the name) before December 2021
Here are the new ones:
5. Be kind - to everyone. Race, color, religion, political party - who cares? People are people all the way down. More kindness hurts no one and might help us heal.
6. Listen more. My own agenda might be wrong. My assumptions need to be challenged. Listen. Think. Consider.
7. Make the effort to stay close to friends and family - even from a distance. Write letters, emails, call (not my happy place). Check in. Care. Tell people I love them.
8. Life is certainly not progressing as anyone planned. So, maybe less planning, and more living. More experiencing. Eyes open, mind still, ready to receive.

May your hopes and dreams exceed your imagination this year.
